On Having Too Much Resistance...

Today I got up bright and semi-early and hit the gym. I ran 2.5 miles and then did an hour of spinning. I am a bad ass...

Except, the lady I normally take my spinning classes from is on a much needed vacation. I'm actually quite proud of her. So I decided to try the Saturday morning class with a new lady. I got there and was, quite obviously, the youngest one, completely surrounded by 40-something women in matching spandex outfits. I, however, was in some old pants, a t-shirt with a large eye on it, and was completely and utterly torn up looking having just run 2.5 miles...

As we are all spinning every 2 minutes the instructor has us "add a gear," which essentially means that you turn up the resistance until you can feel it get a little harder. After 15 minutes I am sweating and panting. I look around and all the women around me are happily spinning, spinning away, chatting, and are not sweating in the least...

After 30 minutes (and 7 more gears) I reach the top of the resistance for the bike and can't turn the little knob up any farther. I am just short of grunting to be able to turn the pedals and have begun to contemplate my own end. I look around and everyone else is happily sweating and are sweat free....

The it hits me...

None of the rest of them are adding ANY resistance...

So I stay at the top for the next 20 minutes, completely covered in sweat. At the nd the instructor tells us to end in a sprint, which I am completely unable to do, so I just keep forcing the pedals around in some semblance of uniformity. The brunette in front of me turns around and says all too perkily...

Come on honey, keep up with us. She said to sprint!!!

To which I add just loud enough to have been heard (maybe)...

Well, if I was biking with no resistance like you are, maybe I could keep up. I mean really, if you aren't even going to try, what's the point of coming?

To which the instructor giggled...

Now mind you, I got a great work out but I guess it just bugs me that people come and do something half-assed. I am glad that I always do things whole-assed.
